FATHER DENIS HARVEY

Denis Harvey was born in Liverpool on 3rd November 1931, the son of Charles and Anne Harvey. He was educated at Our Lady of Lourdes and St Bernard’s Elementary School, Liverpool, and studied for the priesthood at St Joseph’s College, Upholland, where he was ordained on 26th May 1956.

His first appointment, in August 1956, was a brief one as Relief Chaplain to the Carmelite Monastery, Upholland. This was followed in September of that year by another brief appointment to St Philomena, Liverpool, and then moved to St Monica’s, Bootle. In September 1958 he joined the staff of Upholland College. He remained there until 1975 when he was appointed full-time Chaplain to the Deaf and also Chaplain to the Adoration Convent, Liverpool. In September 1977 he moved to Sacred Heart Parish, Wigan. In January 1979 he became Parish Priest of St Joseph, Wrightington, and in 1982 he joined the Skelmersdale Team Ministry. This was followed in March 1984 by his appointment as Parish Priest of St Leo, Whiston. He remained there until September 1991 when he moved to St Benedict, Hindley, as Parish Priest. In August 1992 he became Chaplain to Upholland Carmelite Monastery, and in February 1995 he was appointed Parish Priest to St Teresa, Upholland. The following year he returned to Upholland Carmel as Chaplain where he remained until his retirement. He died suddenly in the early hours of Saturday 19th February 2005. May he rest in peace.
